Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has advised Antony to stop doing ‘stupid’ things, insisting that the winger is not Ronaldinho or Zinedine Zidane.
Berbatov believes Antony can succeed at Man United if he becomes a more selfless player for Erik ten Hag’s side.
He feels the 23-year-old needs to focus less on ‘stupid’ tricks and more on supplying his teammates when playing against an opponent.
Antony has endured a difficult campaign and he has yet to score or assist in his 11 appearances for the Red Devils.
The Brazilian moved to Old Trafford from Ajax in an £85 million deal last summer.
“Erik Ten Hag likes Antony; everybody knows that because they worked together at Ajax,” Berbatov told Betfair.
According to him: “It’s clear he has a soft spot for him because every coach is like this with certain players. Ten Hag is giving Antony his trust.
“Antony needs to know that every time he steps on the pitch, he needs to justify Ten Hag’s trust, work his socks off to show, “Yes, boss, you are trusting me; I don’t want to let you or the team down”.
“However, right now, it’s not working well for Antony. So my piece of advice would be to keep it simple; don’t overcomplicate stuff.
“The moment you start thinking you are Ronaldinho or Zinedine Zidane while you are struggling in games, you are going to suffer even more. Don’t try to do stupid things like tricks that are not beneficial for the team.
“You are so quick. Use your pace to get in behind the defence, get on the ball and start to record assists or shoot to score. That is how simple it is. Stay disciplined and concentrated; it is not so difficult.”
