Yobe Assembly finally amends Hisbah law, defines duties of Executive Chair, State Commandant

The Yobe State House of Assembly has amended the law that established Hisbah Commission to separate the functions of office of the Executive Chairman and State Commandant of the Commission.

The House amended the law after adopting the report of its standing committee on Justice and Religious Affairs on the amendment law.

Shedding more light, the chairman of the committee, Hon Yakubu Suleiman, said the amended law has made provisions for the office of the State Commandant of Hisbah Commission and its functions.

The lawmaker added that under the new provisions, the State Hisba Commandant shall work under the directives of the Executive Chairman in overseeing the activities of the Hisba Corps.

While speaking on the importance of the amendment, the committee chairman said it will assist the Commission in discharging its duties effectively.

In another development, the House has received the names of four nominees for confirmation as Executive Chairman and permanent members of the Hisba Commission.

The nominees are Yahuza Hamza Abubakar as Executive Chairman, Sheikh Mohammed Mahdi, Alkasim A Damagum and Mallam Lawan Abba Shettima as permanent members of the Commission.

Presiding over the sitting, the Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Chiroma Buba Mashio, committed the names of the nominees to the House committee on Justice and Religious Affairs for screening.

DAILY POST had reported that, Governor Buni on October 6, 2023, signed a bill establishing the Hisba Commission.

The Commission is to monitor the enforcement and implementation of Shariah and prevent other social vices in the state.
