In a CNN Op-Ed piece, he stated that during the COP28 World Climate Action Summit in Dubai, UAE, he worried about security concerns, human displacement, environmental deterioration, and other side effects of climate change.

Tinubu stated that Nigeria has faced significant hurdles, including the COVID-19 pandemic, short-term challenges from economic changes, and ongoing currency unification.

Despite these hurdles, he said, the country remained committed to its determination to rebuild a stronger, cleaner economy.

“To uphold our legally binding commitment to a cleaner world, Nigeria launched the Nigerian Carbon Market Initiative at COP28 by joining the African Carbon Market Initiative,” he said.

Reiterating his stance on the injustice in the current economic system, the president said that emerging countries bear the brunt of the consequences despite contributing minimally to the problem.

He stated that African countries cannot tackle it alone and that “a fair and cooperative approach is required.”

He also stated that too many developed countries have resisted doing what they should for far too long.

President Tinubu said that Nigeria is vigorously pursuing the use of the country’s wind and solar resources, but he added that the move away from fossil fuels, which are Nigeria’s economic mainstay, will be difficult.

Tinubu also stated that the European Union’s Global Gateway programme and the United States Government’s Build Back Better World initiative are possible resources for Nigeria’s efforts towards cleaner energy.
