Emmanuel Amuneke has said that, while he would love to coach the Super Eagles if given the opportunity, he is not desperate for the job.<\/p>\n
The 1996 Olympic gold medalist made this statement on Tuesday while speaking to reporters in Owerri, the Imo State capital.<\/p>\n
He said the position of head coach of Nigeria\u2019s national team should be awarded based on merit and with the best interests of Nigeria and football in mind.<\/p>\n
The Spain-based former striker, who played for Sporting Lisbon football club in Portugal and Barcelona football club in Spain, expressed confidence that the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, would eventually appoint the ideal coach for the Super Eagles top job.<\/p>\n
He further said that with a plethora of Nigerian talents scattered across the globe, a lot of professional capacity, technical expertise and consultation would be required to harness the talents, combine them and achieve the needed balance.<\/p>\n
According to him, the Super Eagles\u2019 upcoming World Cup qualification matches against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa and their counterparts from Benin Republic would necessitate the appointment of a substantive coach who would also need some time to put the team together for the best result.<\/p>\n
\u201c I am not desperate to be Super Eagles coach, inasmuch as I nurse the ambition to coach. If I have the opportunity to serve my fatherland, I will accept it and deliver my all,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He, however, called for the development of football at the grassroots to enable further development of the Nigerian league by harnessing more talents.<\/p>\n
