Scores of members of the Benue Motorcycle Association, BEMOA and the National Union Road of Transport Workers , NURTW, Gwer- West, has staged a joint protest over the incessant attacks and murder of their members by suspected armed Fulani herdsmen.
The protest took place on Monday in Naka, the headquarters of Gwer -West Local Goverment Area of Benue State.
The Makurdi-Naka- Ankpa Federal Highway was made impassable by the protesting road transport union workers who blocked the road for several hours in protest over killings of their members and commuters.
The angry union members who carried placards with various inscriptions such as “Stop killing Us”, “Govt should come to our Aid” and “Put check points on flash points, ” amongst others.
They marched to the Division Police Office and chairman of Gwer -West LGA office in Naka Town.
The chairman of BEMOA, Naka branch, Mathew Kwaghza, said they have lost no fewer than 37 members and over 67 motorcycles on the Makurdi-Naka-Ankpa federal highway within two months.
The Gwer West branch Chairman of NURTW, Numba Tyogema, who also spoke with journalists disclosed that with the incessant attacks on motorist plying the road, the union has directed her members to use alternative routes within and outside the council pending the intervention of government and security agencies.
Union workers protest killing of colleagues, commuters
