The Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, of the Nasarawa State College of Education, Akwanga, has reportedly withdrawn its earlier letter sent to Governor Abdullahi Sule, requesting the immediate replacement of the association’s Governing Council Chairman, Dr Ishaya Awotu.
The Union conveyed this decision after an emergency congress held on Monday in Akwanga, Nasarawa State.
In the letter addressed to Governor Sule and copied to the College Provost, Dr Jonathan Thani, and the Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr Ishaya Awotu, NASU apologized for the inconveniences their write-up may have caused.
DAILY POST had reported that the initial letter, dated January 9th, had demanded the immediate replacement of Dr Awotu, citing allegations of the expiration of tenure and a one-man leadership style.
The union, in the same letter, also accused the Council Chairman of victimization, witch-hunting of its members, and conducting meetings with no positive impact on staff welfare.
Recall that Dr Awotu while reacting to the allegations, dismissed them entirely, stating that the meetings were those of the ad-hoc committee constituted by the Governing Council to address internal control weaknesses reported in the College’s whitepaper submitted three years ago.
“His Excellency, the Governor/Visitor to the College has directed the present Governing Council to implement the White Papers to improve both financial and operational systems of the College.
“The present Governing Council has recorded numerous achievements well known to the State Government.” Dr. Awotu further stated.
Addressing the alleged expiration of tenure, Awotu clarified that his appointment was for a duration of four years, set to expire in September of the current year.
The withdrawal of the letter follows the intervention of the Commissioner of Education, Dr John Mamman.
While acknowledging his intervention, Awotu expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for swiftly restoring normalcy to the state-owned institution.
He also commended members of the Governing Council, staff and management of the College for their continued support, stating that their cooperation played a pivotal role in the achievements recorded under his leadership.
He assured Governor Sule that the trust reposed in the present Governing Council would not be abused, promising effective and efficient execution of the assigned tasks with regular feedback reports to the government.
