Two military personnel shot, bandit leader killed in Niger

Two soldiers were allegedly shot by gunmen at a military base in Tegina, Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, during a gunfight in the early hours of Monday.

A suspected bandit leader was reportedly killed in the firefight.

DAILY POST learnt the gunmen were initially moving towards Mashegu and Wushishi local government areas to rustle herds of cattle in the areas but decided to launch an attack on the military base, which led to the gunfire exchange between the two sides.

Confirming the incident when contacted, the chairman of Rafi LGA, Alhaji Ayuba Usman Katako, disclosed that the two military personnel who were shot during the gun battle are responding to treatment at IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna.

He, however, revealed that one of the bandits suspected to be their leader was killed while decrying the continuous, unexpected attacks on the security personnel in the state.

Ayuba Katako stated: “The military, police and vigilantes are trying their best in the state to ensure peace and security of lives and properties and therefore deserve to be commended by Nigerians.”

He then called for more patience, support and prayers by the people to overcome the security challenges confronting the state and Nigeria as a whole

However, efforts to get the reaction of the military in the state failed at the time of filing this report.
