The traditional ruler of Gashaka Local Government Council of Taraba, Alhaji Zubairu Hammangabdo, has praised President Bola Tinubu for the creation of a ministry specially dedicated to livestock development.
Speaking on Wednesday in an event hosted by the Fulbe Development and Cultural Organisation, FUDECO, to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary in Serti, the administrative headquarters of the council, the monarch highlighted the ministry’s potential, which he believed would help in unlocking the vast economic opportunities in the livestock sector.
The first-class chief emphasised that the new ministry could tap into the livestock value chain while coordinating the efforts of stakeholders and agencies interested in developing the sector.
Proper management of the industry, the monarch believed, would go a long way in not only boosting the livelihood of livestock farmers but also contributing to national economic growth.
Pointing out that a well-organised livestock sector could help mitigate recurring conflicts between farmers and herders across the country, he commends FUDECO’s efforts to promote education for herders’ children and foster peaceful coexistence between herders and neighbouring communities.
Also speaking, FUDECO chairperson in the state, Hajiya Aishatu Ardo, stated that the organisation aimed to raise awareness among herders about the significance of Independence Day and encourage them to adopt modern livestock farming techniques.
She urged the Fulbe community to prioritise education for younger generations and to explore alternative economic activities, including improving livestock to increase milk and meat production.
