Stakeholders frown at N363bn allocated to agriculture in 2024 budget

Stakeholders in the agriculture sector have frowned at the proposed N362.9 billion budget for the Ministry of Agriculture in the 2024 Budget.

The stakeholders expressed their views on the budgetary allocation to the sector at a news conference in Abuja on Saturday.

They described the total budget of N362.9 billion as very low, adding that the amount represented only 1.32 per cent of the total Federal Government budget.

The Programme Manager, Food and Agriculture, of ActionAid Nigeria, AAN, Azubike Nwokoye, stated that agriculture should be prioritised in the national budget because it is the sector that can change the economy and employ hordes of young people.

“The budget allocated to the agriculture sector has not exceeded two per cent of the overall budget for the past seven years.

“Nonetheless, actual data has not demonstrated that a sector’s production in terms of social benefit to the society increases with the amount of resources allocated to it,’’ he said.
