SGF Akume calls for unity among Tiv ethnic group

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has tasked a socio-cultural association, Tiv Community in Lagos (Mdzough U Tiv Lagos), to always work towards the unity and progress of the ethnic group.

The SGF gave this charge last Saturday during the grand finale of the Tiv Cultural Fiesta 2024, held at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

The Cultural Fiesta, themed ‘Tiv Heritage: Promoting Unity, Preserving Culture and Traditions’, began on Friday, 15th November, and ended on Saturday, 16th November, 2024.

During the two-day event, Tiv men and women in Lagos, from various walks of life, gathered with their families to express and celebrate their cultural heritage.

The SGF, represented at the event by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Christopher Tarka, commended the organizers for their creative efforts in preserving their heritage.

Akume urged them to unite and extend fellowship with others, especially his principal, President Bola Tinubu, whom he said holds the Tiv people in high regard.

He emphasized that under Tinubu’s presidency, the Tiv people would continue to be recognized in national affairs.

In his remarks, the President of the Tiv Community in Lagos State, Hon. Steven Terfa Uzer, called on all Tiv people to put aside their differences and work towards a common purpose for the growth of the Tiv community.

“I urge every Tiv person in Lagos to join me in this quest for unity. We must recognize that our diversity is our strength and not our weakness,” he said.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the CPC Chairman, Hon. Atondu Thomas, outlined the community’s initiatives to empower Tiv people in Lagos, including plans to acquire land and build a communal space called Ayatutu House, Lagos.

His Royal Highness, Tor Tiv Lagos, Chief Cletus Kukunu, attended the event alongside Tiv Traditional Council members in Lagos and their families.

HRH Luke Atane Och’Idoma Akubo Agaba Idu of Lagos, who was also present, expressed his desire to collaborate with Mdzough U Tiv Lagos for similar events in the future.

Other notable attendees include the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Tiv Community in Lagos, ESV Kwaghbo Simeon Shangev-de, Board member Hon. Prince David Makir, and Mr. Terry Atoba, a stakeholder and businessman in Lagos and Abuja.
