Servicom Week: Imo CP sets up monitoring unit against erring police officers

In responding to public complaints against the unprofessional attitude of some police officers in the state, ranging from extortion to unlawful searching of citizens’ phones, mostly youths, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, in a bid to address the situation, has set up a special unit known as Complain Response Unit, CRU, to monitor and investigate the attitude of some of its officers while on duty.

A press statement issued by the command public relations officer, ASP Henry Okoye, informed that the purpose of establishing the unit emanated from recent community feedback, which according to him raised serious concerns about the uncivil conduct of a few of its officers towards members of the public while on the road.

He stated that the unit would work along with the IGP X Squad unit to investigate the allegations levelled against some of the officers.

The command spokesperson further stated that the directives of the Police Commissioner are in line to mark this year’s Servicom Week, which will emphasise the importance of community involvement in helping security agencies fight against criminalities and other social vices.

ASP Okoye also informed that in recognition of the 2024 SERVICOM Week, the Commissioner of Police Danjuma has put everything in place to engage civil society, highlighting the importance of coming together to fight against social unrest.

He noted that the meeting aims to strengthen police-community relationships and evaluate the quality of police service delivery in the state.

The event, according to the press release, will take place on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at the Senior Police Officers Mess in Owerri.

ASP Okoye pointed out that the initiative highlights the command’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of transparency, accountability and community engagement in enhancing security.

“CP Danjuma encourages the public to actively support police efforts in fostering peace and security. By promoting open communication, the Command seeks to build trust and improve the overall quality of service provided to citizens.

“Recent community feedback has raised concerns about the conduct of a few recalcitrant police officers, including issues of extortion, incivility, and unlawful searching of citizens’ phones, particularly targeting youth. In response, CP Danjuma has directed the Command’s Complaint Response Unit (CRU) and the IGP X-Squad Unit to investigate these matters and enhance oversight of officers on duty,” ASP Okoye stated.

To enhance accountability, the Commissioner of Police has urged the public to report any misconduct by police officers through the dedicated CRU and X-Squad hotlines, 08033424051, 08148024755, 0706 741 9738, and 08103341610.

The command spokesperson maintained that the initiative underscores the command’s commitment to maintaining discipline and upholding high professional standards within the police force, pointing out that the meeting will represent a vital opportunity for all stakeholders to voice their concerns and contribute to the improvement of policing in the state.

“Together, we can create a safer and more respectful environment for all citizens. The Imo State Police Command remains dedicated to enhancing service delivery and upholding the rights and dignity of every individual,” Okoye stated.
