School principals tasked on adoption, domestication of educational best practices in Akwa Ibom

The Senior Education Advisor in Southwark Council, London, David Bromfield has raised the need for the adoption and domestication of educational models that work at the secondary levels in the United Kingdom into the Nigerian school curriculum.

Bromfield who shared his thoughts with principals of Secondary Schools in Akwa Ibom State, proposed this during a two-day skills upscaling training workshop organised by the state government in partnership with the United Kingdom for Principals of public secondary schools in the state.

Bromfield engaged the principals on themes in Leadership in Education, Curriculum Development and Inspection as well as a peer review session on policy development and action plan.

The training, it was gathered, is in preparation for the Education Exchange Programme for public secondary school students in both Akwa Ibom State and the United Kingdom in which the Akwa Ibom Governor and the Mayor of Southwark, London have signed a partnership.

Speaking on the project, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet explained that the state government has concluded arrangements to send students who were successful in the selection examination and some teachers to the United Kingdom for further studies and training.

She said, ” This two-day training workshop is part of the Akwa Ibom -United Kingdom Education exchange programme aimed at allowing the participants to learn and be exposed to global best practices in education.

“I strongly believe that the import of these topics, “Leadership in Education, Managing changes towards a contemporary and Comprehensive theory of learning”, among others will yield positive results in the areas of policy formulation and implementation.

“This is not just for show. From this training we are going to make a proposition to the Head of Service on how we can schedule mandatory training for categories of teachers and Heads of Schools”.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Information, Ini Ememobong, noted that the workshop is a step to opening many vistas of development in the education sector of the state and that more human resources programmes will be introduced to equip Principals and teachers to stay up with contemporary trends in scholarship.
