Mr Olusola Owonikoko, the Executive Director of Project Enable Africa, has charged stakeholders with working together to execute the Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act.
Owonikoko, who is also the founder of the group, made the call at the Disability Inclusion and Leadership (DIAL) Awards and Dialogue Night in Abuja.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Project Enable is a community development effort created in 2014 to advocate for the rights and empowerment of Nigerians with disabilities.
The organization thought that everyone deserved a happy life and that no one should face discrimination because of their disability.
The group strives to empower people with disabilities, raise community awareness of the need to decrease prejudice and stigma, and campaign for disability rights at all levels.
According to Owonikoko, Nigeria waited 18 years to bring the bill into law, which he believes should not have happened given the importance of the law in improving the welfare and living conditions of PWDs.
“It is easy to just believe that we have an Act and just move on but let’s not forget that if we don’t document history and pay attention to it, we will repeat it.
“There are still so many bills and acts around disability that will be passed; we need to understand how those ones will not take 18 years because the Nigerian Disability Act took that long years of advocacy and struggle,” he said.
