Residents seek quick intervention as bridge linking Adamawa with Borno collapses

Residents of Madagali, a major town in the northern part of Adamawa State which shares borders with Goza in Borno State, have appealed for the quick response of federal authorities after a major bridge in the town collapsed.

DAILY POST gathered Sunday that the Madagali Bridge collapsed completely in the night of Thursday, August 15, after a heavy rain that caused an overflow of the Madagali River over which the bridge was built.

People moving goods from northern Adamawa to southern Borno or vice versa now have to stop their vehicles on either side of the collapsed Madagali Bridge, download such goods and have labourers lift the goods on the head and walk through the river to other vehicles at the other end before the journey could continue.

A resident of Madagali, Mathew Maziga, said that Madagali and Goza residents who are most directly affected now suffer much hardship and are waiting hopefully for quick action on the collapsed bridge.

Another resident, Suleiman Abubakar, said prices of goods coming from Borno State have further increased in the locality since the collapse of the bridge, as traders now have to bear the extra burden of paying young men to convey goods across the river.

The residents made the appeal when the management of North East Development Commission, NEDC, visited the site of the collapsed Madagali Bridge on Sunday.

Managing Director of the Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Alkali who led the NEDC team on the visit, assured that work would begin soon to reconstruct the bridge.

He said President Bola Tinubu has given the Commission the go-ahead to fix the bridge.
