Reps ask Nigerian Govt to go after killers of soldiers in Abia

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to probe the circumstances that led to the killing of military personnel in Abia State.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Makki Yalleman on Wednesday during plenary.

It would be recalled that five military personnel were killed at Obikabia Junction in Aba, Abia State.

In the motion, Yalleman described the killing of the soldiers as horrendous and called for urgent action by the lawmakers.

He stated that the assailants carried out a surprise attack on the soldiers and “burnt down the military vehicles at the checkpoint while some soldiers narrowly escaped with gunshot injuries”.

“This form of attack and killing of military personnel by gunmen in the South East and other parts of Nigeria has the potential of dampening the morale of our armed forces, endangering the lives and property of Nigerians, and affecting the war on insecurity which has so far recorded some successes,” he said.

Yalleman urged security agencies to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances that led to this heartless, gruesome, and despicable murder while exercising restraint in the application of military force on civilians.

Speaking on the motion, Yusuf Gagdi, the Chairman of the Committee on Navy, said the perpetrators of the crime and the communities must be made to face the law.

He called for ruthless action against the perpetrators.

“This is not acceptable. We must educate our communities and deal ruthlessly with any community found to be killing our security men. We want to hold them responsible. It is high time we support the government to deal with them ruthlessly,” he said.

Alhassan Rurum, the Chairman of the Committee on Airforce, also condemned the attack on the military personnel.

When the motion was put to vote by the Deputy Speaker, Ben Kalu, who presided over the session, the support for the motion was unanimous.
