The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, (NiMET), said the reported rain and thunderstorms in November in some states were a result of climate variability due to natural and atmospheric conditions.
The Agency gave the explanation in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday, noting that the 2023 rainy season in northern Nigeria is over as earlier predicted.
“There were clouds build-up over the Northwestern and North Central parts of the country and FCT resulted in thunderstorms that we experienced on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th November.
“It however clarified that the development does not change the season as predicted, rather, fluctuations based on temporary weather modulators”, NiMET explained.
The Meteorological Agency added that moisture influx and high energy in the atmosphere resulted in condensation and formation of clouds stating that, “it is not exclusive to Nigeria”.
It observed that in recent times, human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, have led to an increase in greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere.
“This enhanced greenhouse effect is causing changes in the Earth’s climate, a phenomenon commonly referred to as climate change”, it said.
