Protests: Niger Assembly seeks relocation of LG secretariat, replacement of destroyed items

Members of the Niger State House of Assembly have called on the State Government to as a matter of urgency relocate and provide office equipment destroyed by miscreants during the #EndBadGovernance protest in Tafa LGA of the state.

The decision was reached following a Motion of Matter of Urgent Public Importance brought by Muhammad Sanu Idris, the member representing Tafa Constituency.

Idris explained that Tafa LG secretariat was built during the administration of the late Simeon Olasukanmi Oduaye between 1997 and 1998, but was completely destroyed by hoodlums .

He said, “These miscreants while hiding under the guise of protesters did not only destroy the building and cars parked at the premises of the secretariat, they also carted away desktops, tables chairs, air conditioners, refrigerators and other valuables worths millions of Naira.

“All the efforts, time and resources expended on the construction and provision of the office equipments
for the secretariat went down the drain within an hour due to the despicable acts of these miscreants. The location of the Secretariat on the Abuja – Kaduna Expressway made it easily accessible by hoodlums who came in from neighboring communities” .

The lawmaker further noted the need for the executive arm of government to adopt proactive security measures that would stop people from taking advantage of such situations to wreak havoc.

He further called on the government to intervene and assist the people of Tafa LGA by reconstructing and replacing the destroyed or looted items at the secretariat, and relocating the secretariat to a more secure site.

Consequently, the House presided by the Deputy Speaker, Afiniki Eunice Dauda unanimously adopted all the prayers of the motion.
