Police arrest constable for threatening civilians

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a police constable, Prince Chima, attached to the Department of Operatives (DOP) for allegedly threatening some persons in their residence with an AK-47 rifle.

DAILY POST reports that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Funsho Adegboye disclosed this to newsmen in Benin City.

Adegboye, in a statement signed on his behalf and made available to newsmen by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Chidi Nwabuzor, said an orderly room trial has been ordered by the commissioner.

The commissioner explained that the arrest of the police constable was sequel to a viral video sighted on X handle on April 7, 2024 where a young man that wore a blue T-shirt, black joggers trousers, and blue palm slippers who was seen alone threatening with violence some persons in their residence with an AK-47 rifle.

He said as a result of the viral video, the command directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the X-Squad section to investigate the erring policeman, ascertain his metal health status through the command medical officer and commit him to a disciplinary process known as Orderly Room Trial.

He added that, during the investigation, the police operatives, while using technical intelligence, arrested the young man, and he was identified as a police constable attached to the Department of Operatives (DOP).

Adegboye, also added that during interrogation, it was discovered that the erring police Constable with Force Number 534023 PC, was enlisted on January 10, 2020 and trained at the Police Training School Ogida, Benin City.

“Started his policing career in Edo State Police Command and attached to the National Deputy Chairman South South of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Hon Dan Orbih, via the Department of Operations.

“Police Constable Prince Chima said that on the April 7, 2024, he was on duty at the Nipco Petrol Station along Siloko Road, Benin City, when a certain young man who came to charge his phone had altercation with him and the man called him a smelling policeman.

“When the man left the petrol station for his residence, after the interventions of the manager of the petrol station, he followed him home, where what was seen in the video on the Internet happened,” he said.

He, however, commended the people that the police constable took a fight to their house for their patience and tactfulness in handling the situation.

He vowed that the erring officer would face the consequences of his actions.
