Police arraign Ekiti man over alleged assault

The police on Friday arraigned a 31-year-old man, Obi Sunday, before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court over alleged assault.

The defendant, whose address was not given, is standing trial on a charge of assault.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Sodiq Adeniyi, informed the court that the defendant committed the offence on Dec. 26 in Ikere-Ekiti.

According to him, the defendant assaulted one Ilesanmi Taiwo by stabbing him with a broken bottle, causing serious injuries on his neck and right hand during a fight.

He added that the offence contravened Section 255 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor asked the court for adjournment to enable him study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Counsel to the defendant, Mrs Kike Owolabi, urged the court to grant him bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

The Magistrate, Dolapo Babalogbon, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N100,000, with one surety in like sum and then adjourned the case till Jan. 31 for hearing.
