PDP kicks against plan to impose caretaker chairmen on Jigawa LGAs

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has kicked against alleged plans by the Jigawa State Government to impose caretaker committee chairmen across the 27 local government areas of the state.

PDP chairman in Jigawa State, Ali Idris Diginsa, kicked against the alleged plan while reacting to the State House of Assembly’s recommendation for the postponement of local government election in the state to next year.

DAILY POST reported that the Jigawa State House of Assembly had constituted an ad hoc committee to scrutinise the state’s electoral and local government laws to give political parties notice period of 360 days to adequately prepare for elections.

Diginsa warned against the attempt by the Jigawa State House Assembly to tamper with the provisions of Section 7(1) of the Construction of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

He said PDP would not fold its hands and allow the ruling party to mess up the government at the grassroots that is closer to the people just like it has done at the state level.

According to him, “This is a deliberate attempt made by the Jigawa State House of Assembly to pave away for the Jigawa State government to appoint sole administrators for the 27 local government councils of Jigawa State. It is unconstitutional and undemocratic.”

He added that the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission has failed in discharging its legal obligations.

According to him, the Commission is mandated by law to organize local government elections not later than 90 days to the expiration of the tenure of office of the current local government councils as provided by the provisions of Section 64(1) of the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission Law.

“We therefore pass a vote of no confidence on JISIEC, the State Assembly and the government,” he added.

The tenure of Jigawa State local government chairmen and councillors is expiring by July this year.
