In a decisive victory, Mr Yakubu Adamu of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP clinched the win in Saturday’s rerun election for the Birninkudu/Buji Federal Constituency of Jigawa, as officially declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The returning officer, Prof Ahmad Baita, disclosed that Adamu secured 43,053 votes, narrowly surpassing Mr Magaji Da’u of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who garnered 42,544 votes.
Prof Baita clarified that the votes obtained by each candidate during the rerun would be aggregated with those from the March 18, 2023 elections to determine the overall winner of the constituency’s seat in the National Assembly.
“I, Professor Ahmed Baita Garko, hereby certify that I am the returning officer for the 2024 Birnin Kudu/Buji constituency rerun election, held on the 3rd of February 2024.
The contest featured candidates from various parties, with Kamalu Usaman of ADC securing 81 votes, Isa Ado of ADP obtaining 170 votes, Da’u Magaji Aliyu of APC scoring 42,544 votes, Ali Abdullahi Umar of NNPP securing 1,106 votes, Adamu Yakubu of PDP gaining 43,053 votes, and Abdullahi Buhari of SDP with 62 votes.
“Adamu Yakubu of PDP, having met the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” declared Prof Baita.
In response to his triumph, Adamu expressed gratitude to the residents of the eight affected polling units and the entire constituency for reaffirming their support.
DAILY POST reported that the Appeal Court, in November 2023, declared the March 18, 2023, Birnin Kudu/Buji Federal Constituency election inconclusive, leading to a rerun in eight polling units.
