Oyo Senator pushes for renaming of Senate Committee room after late Olubadan of Ibadan

Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Alli Sharafadeen Abiodun on Tuesday called on the upper legislative Chamber to name one of the Committee rooms after the late Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Mahood Olalekan Balogun.

Rising on Order 41 of Senate Rules, Senator Abiodun, a first timer formally announced the death of the 42 Olubadan of Ibadan and further sought the Chamber’s nod to rename a Committee room after the late monarch.

However, this turned the entire Chamber into a laughing theatre as Senators who lamented and groaned over what they described as the “horrific killing of 16 soldiers”, in a motion that was sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua quickly switched mood to uncontrollable laughter.

This was probably so, because, it has never happened in the history of democracy where a Committee room or Chamber is named after a personality.

The prayer to rename the Senate Committee room was ignored as only the one-minute silence was observed through a voice vote on the order of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

The first-class monarch died on Thursday 14th March, 2024 after spending two years on the throne as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan land.
