‘Only genuine love can help us’ – Niger CAN chairman

The Niger State chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Most Rev Dr Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, has stated that Nigerians only show love when they stand to gain something in return.

Bishop Yohanna stated this at the Christmas Mass held at the Catholic Cathedral Church of St. Michael, Kontagora, Kontagora Local Government Area.

The cleric, who is also the Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, lamented that there is no genuine love among people, arguing that it is only genuine love with real sacrifice that can help humanity.

He said: “In the church today, even in society and in government, there is no genuine love. Love is the basis for which we celebrate Christmas

“As Christians, we are expected to show and share love with everyone, especially the less privileged, the sick, those in need, and even the elderly.

“Unfortunately, the kind of love shown by us is the one that we expect to gain something in return.”

He called on leaders to always find out from the people before embarking on any project, maintaining: “If a leader genuinely loves his people, he meets and discusses what they really need and how it will benefit them.”

He further noted: “The President or governor must first check whether the programme will impact the people positively or not. My worry is that politicians only remember the common man during elections and after that, they are on their own.”

“Jesus was more popular among the people because he was always with the poor, helping them. If there is genuine love, the problem we are having today won’t be there.”
