One dead, 30 trapped at mining site in Niger

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed the death of a miner and 30 others, including a site Manager, Alh. Ibrahim Ishaku, trapped at a mining site at Galkogo in Shiroro local government area of the state, following a mining pit collapse.

It also revealed that six people were rescued with severe injuries, saying the incident occurred yesterday, Monday.

NSEMA, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), Hussaini Ibrahim, and made available to newsmen in Minna, attributed the cause of the mining pit collapse to the impacts of rainfall, which softened the soil.

The PRO disclosed that the mine site belongs to a company named “African Minerals and Logistics Limited.”

According to him, “At the time of filing this report, it was gathered that one person has been confirmed dead, six people were rescued with severe injuries, while about 30, which includes the site manager, Alh. Ibrahim Ishaku, were still trapped as of yesterday.”

“The rescuers had to run for their lives as the mine kept falling inside Galkogo village of Shiroro LGA yesterday, June 3, 2024.”

And, due to the unacceptable nature of that environment as a result of banditry, the information of the incident is very scanty, including rescue operations,” NSEMA stated.

Meanwhile, the agency further added that excavators have been deployed for rescue operations.
