Okocha welcomes return of Abe to APC

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State has welcomed the defection of Senator Magnus Abe from the Social Democratic Party, SDP, back to the party.

Abe had defected to SDP to run for governorship in Rivers State in the 2023 general election, following a disagreement between him and the former Governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, after he was unable to clinch the APC ticket.

Abe, who represented the Rivers South-East senatorial district, later emerged as the governorship candidate of the SDP in the 2023 election.

Reacting to the news of the return of the former party stalwart, the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of APC in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, said: “We welcome him with our full chest. We will work together with him. I have said, and I repeat over and over again, that what makes a party tick is not a single individual; it’s a whole lot of people. In other words, in politics, the more the merrier.

“We grant that Magnus was at the founding of APC in Rivers State, and I can say that without any fear of contradiction. But whatever happened, we all know. We were on one part, against an intransigent government or leadership of the APC—an inept leadership in APC.

“But I didn’t think that the proper thing to do was to leave. So I remained. But he left, maybe to pursue an ambition, which we all saw him try to pursue under the SDP. I do not think that in present-day politics, one head is bigger than ten. I don’t think so.”
