Obi donates N10m to Anambra hospital for reporting overpayment in previous pledge

Former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, Mr Peter Obi, has donated N10 million to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala.

Obi had initially pledged N20 million to the institution, including 15 others, but overpaid them by N2.5 million while redeeming the pledge, and the hospital management reported the incident to him. This prompted the former governor to make an additional N10 million donation to them for their transparency.

Obi, who paid a visit to the institution at the weekend, handed the check for the additional N10 million to the management, promising to keep supporting health and educational institutions across the state.

He said: “Today, in furtherance of my unwavering commitment to critical and measurable areas of development—health, education, and lifting people out of poverty, I visited Our Lady of Lourdes College of Nursing Sciences, Ihiala.

“During my visit, I took stock of their progress and was pleased to witness the positive outcomes of our ongoing support. Earlier this year, I donated N20 million to aid their efforts, and in recognition of their commendable work, I made an additional donation of N10 million today.”

Earlier, the CEO of the hospital, Rev. Fr. Onuorah Ugochukwu, revealed that Obi had accidentally overpaid the hospital’s school of nursing by N2.5 million.

The priests said: “He (Obi) had pledged N20 million to 16 medical institutions, paying in instalments, but our hospital received N2.5 million extra.

“We initially thought it was an isolated mistake until other institutions reported the same. When I contacted him about the error, he was pleased with the integrity shown, and today he is here again.”

The former presidential hopeful used the opportunity to harp on the need for transparency, saying that all the institutions he made the donations to—those who reported cases of overpayment—will receive an additional N10 million each.
