NSCDC reiterates commitment to safety of teachers, students in Taraba

The Taraba State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has reiterated its readiness to ensure the safety of teachers and students in schools spread across the state.

The Command gave the assurance on Tuesday when the State Commandant, Adamu Salihu, paid a courtesy call on the Commissioner of Education, Dr Augustina Godwin.

Reacting to the recent killing of a secondary school teacher by some students, the commandant said the Corps will prevent further occurrence in the state.

He assured that the Command would not relent in its efforts to ensure the safety of Taraba State school children and staff while in school.

The commandant, who said he was in the commissioner’s office in order to finalize preparations for the swift take-off of the much-awaited Safe Schools Programme in the state, said the programme will go a long way in ensuring the safety of primary school pupils, students of secondary schools, as well as teachers at all levels.

“The Command want to believe that all stakeholders in the educational sector must work in tandem to ensure that the learning environment is safe for both students and members of staff in Taraba,” he said.

He warned all criminal elements planning attacks on soft targets like schools to desist from going ahead with such plans.

According to him, the recent murder of a secondary school teacher, who was identified as Bassey Sardauna, would have been prevented if the Safe School Programme had taken off fully in the state.

The commissioner, in her response, noted that Governor Agbu Kefas is willing to partner and collaborate with the NSCDC in order to ensure that the dream of providing a safe environment for learning in the state is actualized.

She said “We are ready to support your Corps in any way possible to ensure our schools are safe so that our students and teachers will not live with the fear of criminals coming into the schools to attack them.”
