NRC sacks, demotes staff over ticket racketeering

The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) says it has fired and punished a number of staff who were discovered to be involved in ticket racketeering.

Mr Fidet Okhiria, Managing Director of the NRC, stated this on Wednesday during an interactive session organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Finance on the 2024-2026 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/FSP).

He stated that the NRC was collaborating with security organizations to combat the threat.

The chairman of the House Committee, James Faleke, voiced concern about the corporation’s meager N345 million income remitted in 2023.

“Our concern is that if we expect so much revenue from NRC and we aren’t getting it, then there is a problem.

“I think we should take the decision that the railway should be self-funded to take care of its operations and remit to the government the surplus,” he said.
