North East govs commence regional meeting, ask FG for rail lines

Governors of the North East states have commenced their regional meeting in the Adamawa State capital, Yola, asking the Federal Government to extend railway transport facilities to the region.

The meeting, currently holding in the Banquet Hall of Government House, Yola, is being attended by all the governors of the six states of the zone.

Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, said during the opening ceremony Saturday that the challenges in the region required collaborative efforts.

Urging the Federal Government to assist the zone to overcome its problems, Zulum bemoaned “deplorable condition of roads, lack of functional rail lines, and under-utilization of the waterways” in the region.

DAILY POST reports that there is currently no functional rail line anywhere around the North East states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe.

In a remark welcoming his colleagues, the host governor, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, said the North East Governors Forum has since inception attracted needed attention to the region.

The meeting currently taking place is the 9th in the series conducted by the North East Governors Forum since inception.
