‘Nobody would have contemplated that if I’d won’ – Obi reacts to LP lawmakers collecting N160m SUVs

Former Governor of Anambra State and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has reacted to the alignment of lawmakers elected on the platform of the party to what has been described as the ‘old way’.

DAILY POST reports that each lawmaker in the National Assembly received N160 million for a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV.
Some lawmakers have stressed that it is not new for government workers to be buying vehicles for official duties.
And the LP presidential candidate specifically spoke about the lawmakers being part of the sharing, saying he had a discussion with them on the matter.
Obi said that he was told that vehicles are only for official purposes and ought to be returned when they leave office, adding that things would have been different had Labour Party won the presidential election.

“Let me start with the issue of Labour Party members in the House, I have actually discussed this issue with them. I heard that these vehicles are official cars,” Obi said during a press conference in Abuja on Monday.
“Which means they have to make use of them while in office. They are meant for official use so it’s not as if it’s their vehicles.
“They are meant to use them while they’re in the Senate but you know how things work here. It’s not going to be like that.
“But what I tell people is that had Labour been in office[won the presidency] nobody would have contemplated that.
“You shouldn’t even do the wrong thing and start correcting it. It should not even be mentioned in the first place.”
