NLC strike: Taraba varsity suspends ongoing semester examination

Academic activities have, again, been brought to a standstill in Taraba State University (TSU).

The action which was necessitated by the ongoing nationwide strike has led to suspension of the ongoing first semester examination of the institution.

The state’s other public servants defy the strike action and have continued to report in their areas of primary assignment. The reverse was the case with members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of TSU.

Speaking on why the institution’s academic staff have decided to join the strike, TSU’s chairman of ASUU, Joshua Mbaver, said they are members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and therefore, it was necessary to throw their weights behind their counterparts in other parts of the country.

They vowed to distance themselves from academic activities until the leadership of the trade unions deemed it necessary to call off the ongoing strike.

The announcement suspending the ongoing semester examination, was made by the authority of the institution.

In a circular issued by the school registrar, Joseph U. Bibinu, the leadership of the institution urged both the staff and the students to remain calm, stating that a new date for the continuation of the exams will be communicated.

The strike action by ASUU did not go down well with most of the students who spoke with DAILY POST.

Apart from the TSU ASUU that ensures total compliance of its members with the strike, no other components of NLC in the state participate in the ongoing industrial action.
