NIN-SIM linkage: Telecom subscribers make fresh demands as deadline elapses

Telecommunications subscribers in Nigeria have asked mobile network operators and the Nigerian Communications Commission to extend the National Identity Number and Subscriber Identity/Identification Module linkage deadline by 30 days.

National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers, NATCOMS, National President, Adeolu Ogunbanjo, disclosed this in a telephone interview with DAILY POST on Wednesday.

He noted that telecom subscribers need additional time to complete their NIN-SIM linkage to avoid being disconnected by their mobile network operators.

“It is a terrible time for telecom subscribers in Nigeria as the NIN-SIM linkage deadline expired on February 28. I want to use this medium to appeal to operators and NCC to give subscribers an additional 30-day grace period,” he said.

DAILY POST recalls that in December, telecom operators, on the directives of NCC, had insisted on the February 28 deadline to bar subscribers without NIN-SIM linkage.

The regulators had said the move was necessary to tame rising insecurity in the country.
