1. The Senate has approved President Tinubu’s request to borrow $7.8billion and €100 million as part of the 2022 – 2024 borrowing plan of the Federal Government. The request was approved after the Senate considered and adopted the report of its committee on Local and Foreign Debt during Saturday’s plenary.
2. The Senate on Saturday summoned the heads of security agencies over the gruesome killings of more than 100 persons on Christmas eve in Plateau State. The Senate said the coordinated nature of the massacre showed that there was a failure of security intelligence.
3. The Bayelsa State Government has invited the parents of a four-year-old girl and the 54-year-old man allegedly involved in a marriage in Akeddei community, Sagbama Local Government Area of the state. The government’s intervention is coming on the heels of media reports of a marriage between the child bride and the 54-year-old.
4. President Bola Tinubu, on Saturday, received the Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, who paid him a Christmas homage at his Bourdillon residence in Ikoyi, Lagos. Governor Mbah, who spoke to journalists after the meeting, also reiterated his support for the administration’s economic reforms.
5. The presidency has assured Nigerians that the country’s economy will witness a major turn around in 2024 with efforts being made by President Bola Tinubu to change the narratives. The senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Temitope Ajayi said that the government was working round the clock to revamp the economy and invariably address the current hardship Nigerians are facing.
6. The National Assembly on Saturday, approved the sum of N28.78 trillion as a budget for the 2024 fiscal year. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives jerked up the budget estimates by N1.2 trillion from the N27.5 trillion presented by President Bola Tinubu.
7. Two persons have died while another person sustained serious injuries on Friday night as a tanker laden with petroleum products crashed and caught fire in Ebonyi State. The tanker driver, it was gathered, lost control of the vehicle atop the flyover at the state International Airport Junction, Onueke, on the Abakaliki-Afikpo highway.
8. The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two females identified as Dorcas Adeyinka and Folake Adekoya, and a male, Sikiru Ayinde, over offences bordering on cyberstalking and threat to life. This was disclosed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement posted via his X handle, on Saturday.
9. The House of Representatives is proposing a bill to criminalise non-payment or failure to pay salaries by employers of labour and corporate bodies across the country. The bill, sponsored by Wale Hammed, a member representing the Agege Federal Constituency, Lagos State, titled, “The Employees Remuneration Protection Bill, 2023″, has passed first reading.
10. Anambra State health pensioners have begged the state governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo to pay them 850 million naira arrears owed them by the government after retirement. The retirees lamented that four of their members have lost their lives as a result of the hardship they were facing.
