Nigeria Police Force has no service scheme – IGP Egbetokun reveals

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP , Kayode Egbetokun, has revealed that the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, does not have a service scheme.

Egbetokun made this revelation while addressing police officers of the Kwara State Command on Friday.

The Inspector-General was reacting to insinuations that those who joined the police as constables would not rise to the superintendent cadre.

Egbetokun disclosed that as the IGP, he is just trying to create a service scheme for the NPF since it was established many years ago.

According to him, policemen, as of today, do not know when their next promotion would come because the procedure was not spelt out.

He said: “Someone mentioned about a rumour that when you join police as a constable, you will not go beyond inspector. Let me explain this. The police as at today does not have a service scheme. When I became the IG, one of the things I said I want for the police is to have a service scheme.

“A service scheme is a document where the progression of every officer will be specified. As you are joining the police, you know how you are going to progress. You will know when you are going to be promoted. You will know when you are due for promotion.

“If there will be anything like, ‘if you join as constable, you will not go beyond inspector’, I will not support that it starts with the present policemen that we have. If we are going to do that, it will mean that we are going to start from the beginning; which means that the new set of constables that are coming, they already know that as they are coming into the police force as constables, they are going to terminate at the inspectorate rank.
