Niger: Police arrest two suspects over killing of health worker at wedding ceremony

The Niger State Police Command has arrested two suspects in the killing of a health worker, Umar Mohammed, who was stabbed to death at a wedding ceremony by hoodlums at Gbeganu area of Minna, the State capital.

The incident, it was gathered, occurred last Friday in the area a few minutes after the deceased stepped into the venue of the wedding.

Eyewitness accounts at the wedding venue said the hoodlums, numbering over 10, stormed the venue with dangerous weapons.

The sources disclosed that as the health worker attempted to leave the venue, one of the hoodlums stabbed him in the head with his dagger.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, in a statement in Minna said, Mohammed was returning from his workplace and decided to attend the wedding ceremony.

According to him, “On 17/5/2024 at about 2200hrs, it was reported at Kpakungu Division that there was a wedding ceremony at Gbeganu area, while some miscreants from the Area reportedly led by one Ukasha and others armed with dangerous weapons attacked a victim named Umar Mohammed 35yrs.”

The state police image maker explained that the victim was inflicted with serious injury on the head, and he was rushed to General Hospital Minna, where he later gave up the ghost and was confirmed dead by a doctor.

“The police patrol teams were drafted to the scene and two suspects were arrested while others fled from the scene,” he revealed.

Abiodun added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects as the incident is under investigation.
