Niger legislators urge state government to request FG intervention on major road rehabilitation

Members of the Niger State House of Assembly have called on the state government to, as a matter of urgency, appeal to the Federal Government to award and mobilise contractors to the site for the rehabilitation of the Kontagora-Makera-Mokwa road in the state.

The resolution was reached at Wednesday’s plenary, following a motion sponsored by Abdullahi Isah, the member representing Kontagora II. The lawmaker called on the Assembly to urge the executive arm of government to, as a matter of urgency, request Federal Government’s intervention in the rehabilitation of Kontagora-Makere-Mokwa roads.

Isah told the Assembly that the Kontagora-Makera to Mokwa Road, which connects Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states, as well as the entire local governments of Kontagora Emirate, has been in a very deplorable condition for a very long time.

He explained that the road serves as the link between the Northwest and the Southwest of Nigeria, and therefore, its importance cannot be overemphasised.

According to him: “Repairs on this road were once captured among those to be financed through the SUKUK Bond of the Federal Government but sadly, it was later removed for lack of enough resources.

“This road, a distance of 84 km, now takes motorists about six to seven hours depending on how reckless a driver is, and because of the deplorable condition of this road, many innocent Nigerians have lost their lives.”
