The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Garki Branch, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, has condemned “the illegal harvest and trade of kidneys in the territory and its environs”.
DAILY POST recalls that a report emerged earlier in the week of illegal harvesting of organs in the FCT and Nasarawa State.
Reacting, the chairman of the branch, Obioma Ezenwobodo, said the branch had directed its Health and Medical Committee to keep tabs on the pending legal actions instituted by affected parties in the matter and to ensure that justice was served.
He said the association had taken pro bono legal representation for victims, adding that the branch also enjoined relevant government agencies and professional bodies to work assiduously to nip the ugly trend in the bud by sanitizing and adopting a strict regulatory regime for organ transplants.
It described the illegal harvesting and trade of kidneys as shady, cruel, inhuman and offensive to Section 54 of the National Health Act that proscribed sell or trade in human organs.
