National Chairmanship Tussle: Gunat cautions against retaining position outside North Central

A chieftain and member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Support Groups Coordination (North Central) for the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Nanfwang Dachi Gunat, has reiterated the need to return the National Chairmanship position of the party to the North Central region.

Gunat expressed concerns that the North Central is already united on this demand, warning that any decision contrary to this could negatively affect the party in the region.

He made these remarks during an interview with journalists in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

As a grassroots politician and mobilizer who served on the presidential campaign council of the APC, Gunat said he understands the sentiments of the people in the region.

He stressed that the North Central is unwilling to cede the chairmanship to another region.

He explained that the region’s insistence on retaining the party’s chairmanship stems from the need to prevent its people from feeling marginalized within the party’s structure.

According to him, after the resignation of Abdullahi Adamu, who hails from the North Central, as National Chairman, the most appropriate action would have been to replace him with someone from the same region.

“But instead, Abdullahi Adamu was replaced with Abdullahi Ganduje from the North West region, and since that replacement, the people of North Central have felt marginalized and expressed their displeasure,” Gunat said.

“For the sake of equity, the position should revert to the region so that the party remains unified in the North Central, making it easier to convince members to stay committed to the party and avoid any political decisions that may harm the party’s interests.”

Gunat emphasized that the unified call by party chieftains from the North Central for the return of the chairmanship position demonstrates their firm resolve. He warned that failure to address this issue could have serious consequences for the party in the region.

He also added that retaining Ganduje as National Chairman could lead to disunity within the party, which would not bode well for its progress, especially as the 2027 general elections approach.
