NASS leadership: Tinubu, APC did not make mistakes – Agbese

Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has expressed confidence that Nigerians would soon appreciate President Bola Tinubu for endorsing Tajudeen Abbas as Speaker of the House.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) formally adopted Abbas as its candidate for the Speaker position in April 2023.

Tinubu’s recommendation led to the party’s support for Abbas, resulting in other contenders stepping down in preparation for the 10th Assembly’s inauguration.

Addressing the media from his office, Agbese affirmed the decisiveness of both the President and the APC in selecting Abbas.

He said, “Recommending Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, to be Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives is one of the greatest steps taken in the right direction by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and our great party, the APC.”

Agbese further extolled the exceptional leadership qualities and legislative prowess exhibited by Abbas. He highlighted the formulation of comprehensive policies and programs in the legislative agenda of the 10th Assembly, indicating a strong foundation for the House’s operations.

He elaborated on Abbas’s commitment to transparency and training, stating, “The Speaker is committed to open NASS, where all and sundry would be abreast with the workings and happenings of the House in what we call citizens engagements. He is committed to providing quality training for lawmakers, bureaucrats, and even journalists covering the House.”

Regarding the initial concerns surrounding the Assembly’s functionality due to the majority of freshman lawmakers, Agbese praised the quick adaptation of members.

He emphasized their adherence to House rules and the efficient conduct of debates, reflecting a smooth legislative process.

Agbese celebrated recent accomplishments such as the successful amendment of the standing rules of the House, attributing the achievement to the leadership Abbas and Benjamin Kalu.

He also pointed out the positive transformation in the executive-legislative relationship, indicating a collaborative effort for the benefit of Nigerians.
