Naira appreciates on black market, depreciates at official window

The dollar-to-naira exchange rate appreciated on the black market but depreciated at the official foreign exchange window.

Ashiru Dayyabu, a Bureau De Change operator in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, said the dollar is exchanged at N1,550 at the black market as against N1,565 on Thursday, recording an N15 gain.

“We buy at N1,530 and sell at N1,530 on Friday. However, some legitimate BDCs have not been able to access the dollar at the CBN rate of N1,450,” he said.

The development comes as the CBN said on Thursday that it sold $20,000 each to BDCs at N1,450 per dollar.

However, at the official FX market, the naira depreciated to N1,596.92 per dollar on Friday from N1,566.82 on Thursday, losing N30.1 on a day-to-day basis.
