May 30 killings: Perpetrators must be punished – Ohanaeze

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Friday, called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in dousing the escalating tensions within the South East geopolitical zone of the country.

The group further offered its condolences to the Nigerian Army and the families of the deceased soldiers who lost their lives in the killing of Operation Udoka forces in Aba, Abia State, on May 30, 2024.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo also called on all Biafra agitators to return to non-violent and peaceful means of engagement, as the declaration of sit-at-home campaigns only serves to exacerbate division and hostility.

This was contained in a statement signed by Ohanaeze’s factional secretary-general, Okechukwu Isiguzoro.

According to the statement, Ohanaeze Ndigbo called on the Nigerian Army to focus efforts on apprehending the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.

The statement reads in part: “With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, offers our heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian Army and the families of the brave soldiers who tragically lost their lives during the barbaric and heinous killings of Operation Udo Ka forces in Aba, Abia State, on May 30, 2024.

“The despicable nature of this act is not only unacceptable but also devoid of courage and humanity. In this moment of mourning and lamentation, we grieve for the gallant soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their nation. These heroes were not mere names in uniform; they were beloved sons of Igboland.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly believes that the perpetrators of this heinous crime must face the full weight of justice, as the innocent blood of our Igbo soldiers cries out for retribution. We beseech all Igbo gods and deities to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

“Our condemnation is resolute for the resurgence of violence and attacks in Abia, especially in the once peaceful city of Aba, which had enjoyed seven years of tranquility.

“We call upon all Biafra agitators to return to non-violent and peaceful means of engagement, as the declaration of sit-at-home campaigns only serves to exacerbate division and hostility.”
