Liverpool vs Man Utd: Why I made Scott McTominay captain – Ten Hag

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has explained why he gave Scott McTominay the Red Devils’ captaincy against Liverpool on Sunday evening.

With Bruno Fernandes suspended and former captain Harry Maguire injured, Ten Hag opted to give McTominay the captain’s armband against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Speaking before the kick-off at Anfield, Ten Hag said McTominay is an example to the rest of the squad and deserves to be named captain.

“Absolutely [he has earned it],” Ten Hag said.

“I think he is one of the examples of what it means to play for Manchester United, to play with the badge on his heart.

“He is an example, and the others can take that and build on him.

“I am sure he will be a communicator; I’m sure he will be an example of passion and desire, and you need that in these games.”
