LG autonomy: Nigeria has two tiers of government presently – Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that Nigeria will have three tiers of government only when the anomalies of local government elections are corrected.

Constitutionally, the country is supposed to be running three tiers of government, namely federal, state and local governments.

However, there seems to be a dysfunctional local government system in Nigeria, as the third-tier government is under the control of governors who manage their allocations. Until that is corrected, the country only has two tiers of government, according to Akpabio.

Speaking on the floor of the Senate on Thursday, Akpabio said: “For now, I believe we only have two tiers of government: the federal and state. If we correct the election situation in local government across the country, that is the only time we can have three tiers of government.”

Some states have already conducted elections on local government levels, with Rivers State being the latest to do so.

DAILY POST reports that the local government election in Rivers State was marred by violence following the battle of supremacy between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and the Governor of the State, Siminalayi Fubara.
