Lawmaker seeks amendment of Agric council Act, establishment of fishery college in Akwa Ibom

The Senator, representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, at the National Assembly, Aniekan Bassey has called for an amendment to a bill, “Agricultural Research Council Act (Amendment) Bill 2024”, which has passed the first reading.

He also moved for the establishment of a Federal College of Fishery Technology and Aquaculture in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking at the plenary on Tuesday, Bassey, who is the Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development noted that the college when established would be of benefit to the people of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria in general.

According to him, “There is every need to amend the Agricultural Council Act to establish the Federal College of Fishery Technology and Aquaculture in Uruan.

“The College will provide full-time courses for teaching, instruction and training in fishery technology, aquaculture, applied science, commerce, arts, social sciences, humanities and management.”

“It will also carry out research in the development and adaptation of fishery techniques, make provision for the appointment of a Provost and the officials to carry out the administration and the discipline of students.”
