A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Friday sentenced a 19-year-old labourer, Garba Abdulmuminu, to two months in imprisonment for stealing a phone valued at N20,000.
Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos summarily sentenced Abdulmuminu after he pleaded guilty to the offence.
Bokkos, however, gave him the option of paying a N10,000 fine or one month in prison and also ordered him to pay N20,000 as compensation to the complainant or to spend another one month in prison in default.
The magistrate said the punishment would serve as a deterrent to other would-be offenders.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on December 7, 2023, at the Angwan Rogo Police Station, Jos, by one Idris Abdulmuminu, who was the complainant.
The prosecutor said the convict conspired with his friend at large and stole the phone, which was valued at N20,000.
The offence, according to the prosecutor, is punishable under the Plateau Penal Code Law.
