Kogi Govt moves to prevent cholera outbreak

The Kogi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a cholera-free environment statewide by unveiling comprehensive infection prevention measures as a proactive step against the disease.

Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza, the Commissioner for Health, disclosed this in a statement released to journalists in Lokoja on Wednesday.

He highlighted the decisive actions taken by the state government in response to the recent cholera outbreak nationwide.

Adeiza noted that Kogi State has been relatively fortunate with minimal impact from the current outbreak, identifying no more than two confirmed cases in Lokoja and Omala Local Government Area of the State.

“Thankfully, there have been no fatalities, with one case treated and discharged while the other remains under care”he said.

To prevent further spread, Adeiza stated that the Ministry of Health has implemented rigorous surveillance protocols, conducted extensive training for healthcare professionals, and launched widespread awareness campaigns.

“We have equipped our healthcare workers with necessary training and resources to ensure a swift and effective response to any potential outbreak,” Adeiza said.

He stressed the importance of community involvement, highlighting collaboration with community leaders, religious figures, and traditional rulers to educate the public on preventive measures to avert cholera outbreak in their locality.

According to the commissioner, “Citizens are encouraged to maintain good hygiene practices, including regular hand washing and consumption of clean water,” he added.

“A dedicated cholera response team comprising healthcare workers, surveillance officers, and laboratory technicians has been formed, tasked with investigating reported cases, collecting samples, and administering appropriate treatments”.

It could be recalled that Kogi State Government recently announced two cases of cholera outbreak in Lokoja and Omala Local Government, respectively.
