Kano Emirate Council tussle: Minister warns Kwankwaso against contempt of court

The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusif Abdullahi Ata, has warned the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria’s Peoples Party, NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, against “making contemptuous statements on the ongoing Kano Emirate Council legal tussles.”

The minister urged Senator Kwankwaso to “refrain from making statements that could deepen divisions in the country and lead him to contempt of court with regards to the Kano Emirate Council legal actions.”

Ata made the remarks in response to Kwankwaso’s allegations of interference from Lagos in the selection of Kano’s Emir.

He noted that “The issue of the Kano Emirate is still pending in court” and warned that Kwankwaso’s comments might be perceived as contempt of court.

During the convocation of Skylight University, Senator Kwankwaso had said, “Today, we can see very clearly there is a lot of effort from the Lagos axis to polarize this part of the country… Lagos wouldn’t allow us to choose our Emir.”

Ata responded, stating, “My remarks underscore the need for leaders to act responsibly to foster unity, rather than causing disharmony and creating uncertainty among the citizens.”
