The All Progressives Congress, APC, has alleged that the Governor Abba Yusuf-led New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, government in Kano State is planning to misappropriate local government funds amounting to over N8 billion.
Kano APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, who made the allegation in a statement issued Tuesday, said the political uncertainty on what would be the outcome of the Supreme Court judgement on the disputed gubernatorial election in the state appears to be pushing the NNPP government to usurp the functions of local governments.
He said: “The APC in Kano has gotten a copy of the letter of conveyance of approval from the Ministry for Local Government directing the 44 local councils to release the sum of N101,655,000.38 million and N3,607,370,858.00 million each for the construction of Dan’Agundi and Tal’udu Interchanges respectively.”
Abbas noted that the approval letter, which was allegedly sent to all council chairmen, and copied to the Auditor-General of the state, local government audit and all zonal inspectors of the Ministry, directed the local councils to contribute to the projects.
He, therefore, warned the local government councils and commercial banks to halt the process of clearing the release of the funds “at this critical period of the NNPP’s unreliability”.
The Kano APC chairman noted that last Friday, the Kano State Government removed and posted new Directors of Personnel Management (DPMs) and treasurers to ensure that there are no hindrances in its plot to embezzle local council funds.
