Kaduna State nurses, midwives call off strike

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNMW), Kaduna State Branch, has officially called off its indefinite strike action that began on October 2nd.

The call-off of the strike followed a successful negotiation with officials from the Kaduna State Government.

A meeting on Thursday, October 24, with the Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, led discussions with union leaders and key government officials that resulted in the suspension of the strike.

The meeting had in attendance the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, and the Commissioner of Health. The commitment of the governor to improve the welfare of health workers and all state employees was emphasized.

It was announced during the meeting that the governor has directed a committee on Labour matters, chaired by his deputy, to expedite negotiations regarding the new minimum wage with the Labour unions within the next seven days and to submit a report for implementation.

The demands of the health workers would be taken into account in the new minimum wage negotiations, highlighting the government’s dedication to addressing their concerns and ensuring better working conditions.

In a circular issued to its members, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives urged nurses and midwives to resume their duties starting at 12 PM on Friday, October 25, 2024.

The circular was signed by the Public Relations Officer and Acting Secretary, Conrade Yashi G. Nassa.

The suspension of the strike marks a significant step towards restoring normalcy in the healthcare sector of Kaduna State, as health workers are now expected to return to their posts, providing essential services to the community.

The union, therefore, expressed appreciation for the government’s willingness to engage in dialogue and work towards solutions that benefit both the workers and the citizens they serve.
