Gov Buni warns pastoralists against grazing on farmlands

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has warned that the government will not condone any act capable of breaching peace among farmers and herders in the rural communities.

Buni gave the warning shortly after presiding over the swearing-in ceremony of Chairmen of local government caretaker management committees on Monday.

He admonished the caretaker chairmen to pay special attention to farmers/grazers relationships at this period of farm harvests and migration of herdsmen.

“Let me warn that the government will not condone any act capable of breaching peace among farmers and grazers in the rural communities.

“Grazers are advised to avoid trespass on farmlands that are yet to be harvested.

“On the other hand, farmers should not block the cattle routes to hamper free movement of livestock”, Buni warned.

As the state strives to improve food sufficiency and security, the governor urged them to support farmers in their respective local government areas to embrace irrigation farming.

“The state Government is prepared to partner and support all councils going into irrigation farming,” he stressed.

He, however, warned that the government would not compromise accountability, nor tolerate diversion or mismanagement of public resources, directing the State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to supervise the performances of the management committees.

“You should key into our policy of cost-effective governance. You should make governance less expensive and put more resources into projects and programmes that have direct bearing on the lives of the people”, Buni tasked them.
